I’On Village 2014 Summer Concert Series, Mt Pleasant Features CSO Gospel Choir With Guest Conductor Dr. Tony McNeil, Thursday, August 21

Dr. Tony McNeil, Guest Conductor

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 8, 2014 Charleston SC—The CSO Gospel Choir will continue the I’On Summer Concert Series on Thursday, August 21 at 7:00pm in a performance entitled The Great Migration: 1915-1930 African-American Southern Exodus, at East Cooper Montessori School, 250 Ponsbury Road, Mount Pleasant, SC. This special performance is part of the I’On Summer Concert Series sponsored by the I’ON Group and I’ON Club.

Under the direction of Guest Conductor Dr. Tony McNeil, the performance is inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabelle Wilkerson. Through dramatic gospel music and historical narration, the Choir will musically chronicle this massive exodus experience, the largest internal migration in U.S. history.
Six million African-Americans fled the South from 1915 to 1970 and forever changed the country, North and South. Bringing with it new forms of gospel, jazz, Motown, rhythm and blues and hip hop, this mass departure changed the cultural and political landscape of America, exerting pressure on the South to change and paving the way toward equal rights for the lowest caste people in the country.
Inspired by this national best-selling book, the acclaimed CSO Gospel Choir will re-tell one of the greatest underreported stories in American history through sacred, spirituals and gospel music.  Selections will include the classic Lord Keep Me Day by Day, Just A Closer Walk With Thee, and I Need You to Survive and many others popularized by the evolution of traditional and modern gospel music.
The concert series sponsor the I’ON Group and The I’ON Club will provide a post0performance reception for ticketholders in celebration of the series success and the opening of The Porch at I’ON restaurant.
